Startex is a small historic mill village along US-29 west of Spartanburg, built around the old Startex cotton mill on the South Tyger River. The mill itself has drawn recent redevelopment interest for housing and retail, and the surrounding community still carries the tight-knit, older-housing character typical of the county's textile-era villages.

The South Tyger River runs alongside Startex, and the old Startex Mill complex — now the subject of ongoing redevelopment plans — anchors the community's identity.
